Day 16 - Monument Valley to Zion National Park

The next morning we were up early to watch the sun rise.  We set up the Gopro to take a timelapse video (video to follow) and as breakfast was served during the sunrise we decided to have a leisurely breakfast and watch the sunrise from the restaurant.  I really didn't want to leave the hotel, it was just so relaxing sitting on the balcony gazing at the view.  So the downside of this was that it delayed us setting off.  In hindsight we should've allowed more time here but maybe in the future we may come back.

We checked out of our hotel about 10.30 which is unheard of for us as we are used to very early starts but we really didn't want to leave this amazing peaceful place but we needed to carry on the next stage of our trip.

Next stop Horseshoe Bend.  Wow this was just as spectacular as I was hoping it would be.  I have seen so many photos of this over the years and it was amazing to finally see it with my own eyes.

We took a few photos and did the Earthcache before going back to the car for our packed lunch then popping in to the Carl Hayden Visitor Center at Glen Canyon Dam.

There are so many things to see in this area we really felt that we didn't have enough time to see them all and we found ourselves saying more than once 'we really need to come back'.

One of the virtuals on our to-do list was The Lost Cemetery.  It involved driving 5 miles into the middle of nowhere down a dirt track.  There were warnings about not driving down the track if there was any threat of rain due to the risk of being washed away by flash flooding etc.  It really wasn't the sort of place you'd want to break down.  After what seemed like forever we finally arrived at a suitable parking area and we walked the last ½ mile or so on foot as we didn't fancy getting the jeep stuck on our own.

Checked into our hotel, tomorrow we head into Zion National Park.
