Day 13 - Joshua Tree National Park

Checked out of our motel and headed to the supermarket for supplies for the coolbox for the day as we're heading into the Joshua Tree National Park.

On the way we had a quick look in the visitor centre and there were signs offering stark warnings of just how dangerous a place the park can be and to make sure you're prepared for the intense heat.

There were also warning signs about taking care not to drive over tarantulas and to be aware of snakes.

We'd only planned on a short visit but when we arrived the scenery was breathtaking so we decided to spend a bit more time and find a few virtuals.

The heat in the park was intense and we were glad we were only walking a couple of miles.  The walk took us to an old abandoned mill, an interesting spot and so weird to think that people would work out there in such intense heat all those years ago.  All the way I kept my eye out for spiders and snakes.  We saw lots of lizards some large and some tiny then on the return leg I was scanning the path in front of me when I spotted a snake, it was browny orange and quite long, I turned on my heel but Mark stayed to watch it and film it.  I was only happy to walk past once it had disappeared into the bush.  I don't have a fear of snakes, just a healthy respect and really didn't want to get too close.

Each time we thought 'ok time to move on' we came across another interesting place to stop off.  Our final stop off was the Cholla Cactus Garden.  These are seriously scary cacti.  You are warned not to tough or brush up against them due to the spines having microscopic barbs on them which make it very painful to remove.

We headed out of the park and onto Lake Havasu city along Highway 62 which was a very long road which went on for miles.  We can imagine this road has been used on many a movie.

After a 166 mile drive we finally arrived at our hotel.

Tomorrow we have a long drive to the Grand Canyon a 230 mile journey.
